Floods in Erdenet

After a day of heavy raining, we were stuck for a few hours in Erdenet, northern Mongolia. The town was split in two by a river of mud with currents that could have taken our truck away!
This one being the only practicable road around, there was not much else to but to sit and wait..

It had been a long and hectic day of driving under the rain and after 20 days in the car everyone was feeling quite tired...

after some time, a truck takes a chance...

and off we go after him!

Dancing clouds

The Baikal Ghesthouse

No we're not going back to the Baikal, but northern Mongolia is quite close to the famous lake, hence the guesthouse name.

Just some lovely memories from probably the friendliest amongst the friendly.. It's in Murun on the road to Hovskol lake, go say hi for me if you stop by!

Chillin' by the pool..

..table!

At the marketplace, while women shop for groceries in recycled tank trucks, men chill out at the pool tables.

Above us only sky

Luck with a smile

Without this guy showing up with his boat just at the very moment of despair, we would have spent a night walking in the woods on the wrong side of lake Hovskol! Cheers mate ;-)

Huge!

This may not look that impressive at first glance, but it is by far the biggest bird I've ever seen! On the ground, from the car, i first thought it was just a big rock, until i realised the rock had head moving and that there were many similar ones nearby!

I tried to get as close as possible, for all i had was a 28mm lens, and shot it shortly after take off.. but to get it that big, in flight, with a 28! I'm telling you the beast was huge!

They call them "tass" (which is a literal transcription of what the driver told me so don't take my word for it!), but i guess it's some kind of giant vulture.. anyways, got to see it to believe it!

The making of..

On the menu tonight..

Don't mean to sound like a sissy but it was the first time i saw two men slaughter, skin and cut open a goat, all with a pocket knife..

The house dog was fed with the beating heart.

We weren't originally supposed to watch this, then they let two of us.. the man on the foreground kept dictating at what point of the process i was allowed to take pictures.. ritual or whim?

Grace

..and there, in the middle of the dust and the taxis of a small provincial town, out of nowhere, she walked by, looking as if she had just come out of the Galeries Lafayette!
